Anthony Fuina of Long Island, New York, was diagnosed with a large colon tumour in 1997. After doctors removed half of it and took a biopsy, Anthony anxiously awaited the results. While driving through the rain on an urgent errand one day, he stopped near a traffic light when a bearded man in a white baker’s uniform asked for a lift to Jerusalem Avenue and Hicksville Road. Although Anthony never picked up hitchhikers, he felt compelled to let the man in.

During the journey, the man told Anthony that he sensed he was worried about an illness. Anthony shared his situation, and the man asked to place his hand over the area where the surgery had been performed and pray. As he prayed in another language, Anthony felt an intense sensation like electricity coursing through his body. The old man then declared that he was healed. When asked, the old man said that he was a servant of God. Soon they reached the destination, and the old man thanked him again and urged him to attend healing masses and pray for those in need. After crossing the street, he disappeared.

Anthony drove back home and shared the miraculous experience. Just then his doctor called to tell him that the biopsy result was negative, but he had to remove the remaining tumour. However, during the surgery, the doctor was shocked to discover that the tumor had completely vanished.
Three years later, Anthony was diagnosed with stage 4 oesophageal cancer, and his family once again turned to prayer. One day, his daughter, Stacy, gave him a picture of Padre Pio she received from a devout family. Anthony couldn’t believe his eyes! It was Padre Pio who sat in his passenger seat and prayed for his healing three years ago! After chemotherapy and radiation, Anthony underwent an endoscopy that once again stunned doctors—the cancer had disappeared!
In 2002, Anthony and his wife attended the canonization of Padre Pio. He also started the Padre Pio Miracle Foundation to help children with cancer. Before passing away in 2017, Anthony Fuina donated his white Acura Legend to the Rosa Mystica House of Prayer in central New York, where it now serves as a confessional — a marvellous connection to Padre Pio’s renowned ministry of hearing confessions.
