SURGE IN MASS AND CONFESSION, IS AMSTERDAM FAITH REVIVING?

📅 September 9, 2026 👤 SG News 💬 0 Comments

More than 600 Catholics gathered in the heart of Amsterdam on September 5 for Radio Maria Netherlands’ sixth International Rosary Rally, filling Our Lady Church on Keizersgracht to capacity for a traditional Pontifical High Mass celebrated by Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke. The turnout was so strong that some faithful remained outside the church, while inside one of the most striking scenes of the day unfolded around the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Several priests heard Confessions during the Mass, with large numbers of Catholics approaching the sacrament. According to the Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam, one priest alone counted around 60 penitents. The diocese later described an overflowing church and long lines for Confession as defining images of the gathering.

Bishop Jan Hendriks of Haarlem-Amsterdam said the scenes reflected a deeper spiritual search taking place in the city. He spoke of people carrying a longing in their hearts for meaning, for God and for Jesus Christ. After Mass, the faithful formed a Marian procession from Keizersgracht through central Amsterdam toward Vondelpark. Participants prayed the Rosary and sang Marian hymns while prayers were offered in several languages, reflecting the international character of the gathering. At Vondelpark, Cardinal Burke delivered a reflection on the importance and spiritual power of the Holy Rosary, while participants prayed for peace, conversion and the spiritual well-being of society.

The Rosary Rally began in 2021 and has since developed into an international Catholic prayer gathering inspired by the message of Fatima and the First Saturday devotion.Organizers and diocesan officials described this year’s gathering as a visible sign of unity, faith and hope in one of Europe’s most secular cities. While a single event cannot by itself prove a broader religious revival, the overflowing church, strong participation in Confession and public Marian devotion offered a striking picture of renewed Catholic interest in Amsterdam.
