ONE SAINT, TWO POPE LEOS: THE REMARKABLE CONNECTION TO ST. ROBERT BELLARMINE

📅 September 19, 2026 👤 SG News 💬 0 Comments

A SAINT WHO SHAPED THE CHURCH IN TURBULENT TIMES

More than four centuries ago, a brilliant Catholic theologian helped guide the Church through one of its most turbulent periods. St. Robert Bellarmine, a Jesuit and influential defender of Catholic teaching during the Protestant Reformation, was named a cardinal by Pope Clement VIII in 1599. His writings became important references on the Church and her unchanging Tradition.
In 1605, Bellarmine took part in the conclave following the death of Pope Clement VIII. Alongside 61 other cardinals, he helped elect Alessandro Ottaviano, who became Pope Leo XI. But the new pope’s pontificate was remarkably brief: after falling ill, Leo XI died just 26 days after his election.

400 YEARS LATER, HIS NAME LIVES ON IN LEO XIV

Then, roughly 400 years later, another connection emerged. The current Pope Leo XIV was baptized Robert Francis Prevost, and September 17 — the feast of St. Robert Bellarmine — is celebrated as his name day. The Vatican also observes the feast as a holiday in recognition of the Pope’s baptismal patron.
Two Pope Leos. Two different centuries. And one saint whose legacy continues to remind the Church that faithful teaching, courage and love for the truth can reach far beyond one lifetime.
