A deeply troubling pattern is emerging in Egypt, where Christian girls—particularly from the Coptic community—are reportedly being targeted in cases of disappearance, forced conversion, and marriage. Christians make up about 10% of Egypt’s population and are among the oldest Christian communities in the world. Among the earliest of all Christians, the Copts inhabited Egypt for many centuries before the Islamic conquest in the 7th century. Over subsequent centuries, they have faced various forms of persecution. In recent decades, a phenomenon has emerged in which Coptic women disappear without a trace. Despite this historic presence, reports indicate that in recent decades, Coptic girls have been vanishing under suspicious circumstances.

While Egyptian authorities often describe such cases as isolated incidents involving personal or family disputes, other observers argue that there is an ongoing and underreported pattern of abductions targeting Christian females. A United States Congressional hearing in July 2012 noted an increase in such incidents following the 2011 Egyptian revolution. Advocacy groups have described the issue as “persistent and significant,” though difficult to document due to limited reporting and restricted access to information.

Reports indicate that abductors use various methods, including forceful kidnappings by groups as well as more subtle tactics such as coercion or deception. Many cases remain hidden, as families often fear retaliation or are discouraged from speaking out. In some instances, relatives who persist in seeking justice reportedly face intimidation or even imprisonment.

The situation highlights growing concerns over the vulnerability of Christian girls in Egypt. Amid fear and silence, many families continue to seek answers, while the wider Christian community calls for greater protection, transparency, and justice for those affected.
