A historic moment of faith unfolded in Lima as Peru’s revered image of the Lord of Miracles entered the Government Palace for the first time in 40 years.Thousands of faithful filled the streets of the Peruvian capital on October 18 for one of the country’s most important Catholic traditions. The procession of the Señor de los Milagros — also known as the Cristo Moreno — made its way through central Lima before entering the Honor Courtyard of the Government Palace.

The last time the sacred image entered the presidential complex was in 1986.President Keiko Fujimori, accompanied by Prime Minister Luis Galarreta and members of the Council of Ministers, received the image and participated in the official homage. The courtyard was decorated with an elaborate floral carpet bearing symbols of Peru, while the presidential cavalry regiment rendered ceremonial honors to the Cristo Moreno.

Members of the Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles carried the massive processional platform on their shoulders into the palace. The annual October procession is one of the most deeply rooted expressions of Catholic devotion in Latin America. Each year, Lima becomes a sea of purple as devotees accompany the image through the streets with prayers, hymns and acts of penance.

This year’s celebration also carried a special intention.Peruvian Catholics have been praying for Pope Leo XIV following his recent lung cancer diagnosis and surgery. The Holy Father spent decades serving the Church in Peru before becoming Pope, creating a particularly strong bond with the country. His recovery has brought relief and renewed hope that his planned November visit to Peru may still take place.

As the Lord of Miracles returned to Peru’s seat of government after four decades, the moment brought together history, national tradition and the faith of millions. For Peru, the Cristo Moreno remains more than an image. It is a symbol of faith, hope and a devotion that has endured for generations.
