The next World Youth Day (WYD)—scheduled for 3–8 August 2027—will mark a historic first as the international Catholic youth celebration takes place in a country where Christians are a minority, organizers and Church leaders announced. The landmark event will be held in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, drawing young Catholics from across the globe for a week of faith, fellowship and cultural exchange.
Since its inception by St. John Paul II in 1985, World Youth Day has become a transformational spiritual festival that brings together hundreds of thousands—and sometimes millions—of young people for prayer, catechesis, and vibrant cultural celebration. The Seoul event will be only the second World Youth Day in Asia and the first ever in a nation where Christians are not the majority—an extraordinary testament to the global reach and diversity of the Catholic Church.
South Korea’s Catholic community—about 12% Catholic and around 30% Christian overall—has a unique history of faith; the Church there was largely founded by lay believers reading religious texts, rather than by foreign missionaries. This self-propelled story of evangelization and perseverance gives special resonance to the upcoming gathering of youth from around the world.
The official theme of WYD Seoul 2027, chosen by Pope Francis before his death, is drawn from John 16:33: “Take courage! I have overcome the world.” The theme aims to inspire young Catholics to embrace courage in faith and hope in Christ, especially in a cultural context marked by diversity and challenge.
Organizers say the festival will be an opportunity for young people to experience the universality of the Church, deepen their relationship with Christ, and foster intercultural dialogue, uniting youth from different backgrounds in worship and witness.
As preparations continue, World Youth Day Seoul 2027 promises to be a moment of joy, courage, and spiritual renewal—a powerful celebration of faith in a place where Christians are a vibrant yet humble minority.
