Dhaka – February 13, 2026

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, is on course for a historic landslide victory in Bangladesh’s first national election since the 2024 mass uprising that reshaped the country’s political landscape.

Although final official results are still pending, projections from local media indicate the BNP has comfortably crossed the 150-seat threshold needed for a parliamentary majority in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad. Jamuna TV projected the party securing as many as 212 seats — enough for a commanding two-thirds majority.

Shortly after early results emerged, the BNP declared victory, stating it was set to form the next government.

Jamaat Concedes Defeat

The Islamist-led coalition headed by Jamaat-e-Islami was projected to win around 70 seats — a significant improvement from past performances but far short of forming government.

Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman conceded defeat, pledging that his party would not engage in obstructionist opposition politics.

“We will do positive politics,” he told reporters.

US Swift to Congratulate BNP

Even before the final tally was announced, the United States Embassy in Dhaka congratulated Rahman and the BNP on what it described as a “historic victory,” signaling early international recognition of the outcome.

The Election Commission is expected to publish final results for 299 constituencies later Friday. An additional 50 seats reserved for women will be allocated based on party representation.

A Political Turning Point

This election marks the first without the country’s two dominant political figures of the past decades:

  • Sheikh Hasina, leader of the Awami League, who was ousted following the August 2024 student-led uprising and has since remained in India.
  • Khaleda Zia, former BNP chief and Rahman’s mother, who passed away in December.

Rahman returned from nearly 17 years in exile following his mother’s death and quickly emerged as the frontrunner for prime minister. The Awami League was barred from contesting after its registration was suspended by the interim administration.

Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, who has governed since Hasina’s removal, is expected to step down once the new government is sworn in.

Referendum on Major Reforms

Alongside the general election, voters also participated in a referendum on the July National Charter, which includes sweeping reform proposals such as:

  • Limiting prime ministers to two terms (10 years)
  • Establishing an upper house of parliament
  • Restoring a 90-day caretaker government system before elections

The reforms were negotiated under Yunus’ interim government with support from several political parties.

Hasina Rejects the Vote

From exile, Hasina denounced the election as “deceptive,” claiming low turnout and empty polling stations. She demanded the vote be canceled and called for Yunus’ resignation.

Her supporters argue the process lacked legitimacy without the Awami League’s participation, while critics maintain that past elections under her rule were marred by opposition boycotts and allegations of intimidation.

Regional and Global Implications

India is closely monitoring developments in Dhaka due to concerns over shifting diplomatic alignments following Hasina’s removal. Ties between New Delhi and Dhaka have cooled, raising questions about Bangladesh’s evolving relationship with Pakistan and China.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that New Delhi would assess the situation after the final mandate becomes clear.

With a decisive electoral mandate, Tarique Rahman now faces the task of stabilizing the economy, addressing concerns over minority protection, and navigating complex regional geopolitics.

Bangladesh stands at a pivotal crossroads — with voters signaling a demand for reform, stability, and a new political chapter after years of turbulence.
