On March 19, 2026, Rome marked the Solemnity of Saint Joseph with a profound public witness of faith, as a solemn procession departed from the Basilica of San Giuseppe al Trionfale and moved through the streets north of Vatican City.
The procession, marked by prayer and reverence, formed the heart of the celebration, drawing the faithful into a visible expression of devotion to the earthly father of Jesus. Following the procession, Holy Mass was celebrated, presided over by Cardinal Emil Paul Tscherrig, head of the basilica, as part of the patronal festivities in honor of Saint Joseph.
From March 15 to 19, the celebrations also featured an extraordinary exhibition of revered relics: the Sacred Mantle of Saint Joseph and the Veil of the Virgin Mary, preserved at the basilica. Displayed in a richly adorned reliquary of gold and precious stones, the veil is placed above, while the mantle rests below—inviting the faithful into contemplation of the Holy Family’s hidden life.
According to tradition, these sacred objects remained hidden for over 1,600 years in the Basilica of Sant’Anastasia near the Circus Maximus, after being brought to Rome by Saint Jerome in the 4th century.
