Vatican City — Meeting with members of the Pro Petri Sede Association on Wednesday, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that the Successor of Peter must always remain free to proclaim truth, denounce injustice, defend the vulnerable, and promote peace in a troubled world.

The association, which supports the ministry of the Pope, traces its heritage to the Papal Zouaves—young Catholic volunteers who defended Pope Pius IX and the Papal States in the 19th century. The Pope noted this legacy while recognising that the Church’s mission today looks very different.

“No more fighting with weapons”

Pope Leo highlighted that the socio-political landscape has transformed drastically since the 1800s. There is no longer any question of military defense of the Papacy.

Recalling the events of 1870, he praised Pope Pius IX for refusing to allow violence when Italian troops entered Rome during the Risorgimento:

“Even Pope Pius IX carried out a prophetic gesture by refusing to let blood be shed.”

Today, the Pope said, defending the Church does not involve force, but courageously witnessing to the Gospel.

Freedom of the Pope essential for unity and justice

Pope Leo affirmed that the Bishop of Rome has the mission to unite the faithful and proclaim the Gospel of salvation. For this mission to be effective, the Successor of Peter must have full freedom to speak.

“How important it is—especially in the troubled times in which we live—that ‘Peter’ keep his total freedom to speak the truth, denounce injustice, defend the rights of the weakest, promote peace, and above all proclaim Jesus Christ who died and rose again.”

He stressed that these responsibilities are essential for the Church’s role as a moral and spiritual guide in a divided world.

Gratitude for prayer and charity

The Pope expressed warm appreciation for the association’s prayers, charitable work, and support for the poor.
He singled out their financial assistance to a charitable initiative in his former Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru.

“The establishment of a training center for those most in need will be of great usefulness… allowing me, although separated by distance, to remain close through thought and charity.”

Entrusting the association to Mary

Concluding his address, Pope Leo encouraged continued prayer for the Pope and the Holy See, reminding the members that spiritual support sustains the Church’s mission.

He entrusted the Pro Petri Sede Association to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking that she accompany and protect their efforts.
