Pope Leo XIV urged peace in the Middle East, warning that escalating conflict in Iran could trigger a wider regional crisis. Speaking after the Angelus on Sunday, March 8, in St Peter’s Square, he expressed concern that fear and instability could spread to other countries, including Lebanon, according to EWTN News.

Disturbing reports were said to continue arriving from Iran and across the region as violence and destruction intensified. Church officials stated that the Holy Father expressed concern that the growing climate of hatred and fear could destabilise neighbouring states and deepen tensions across the Middle East. The pope prayed for peace and urged that “the thunderous sound of bombs may cease and weapons fall silent,” so that dialogue and reconciliation could begin.
He entrusted those affected by violence to the intercession of the Virgin Mary and expressed hope that reconciliation and stability would return to the region.

Before the Angelus prayer, the pope reflected on the Gospel account of the Samaritan woman. Vatican News reported that he described the encounter as a reminder that Christ responds to humanity’s spiritual thirst and awakens faith. He also highlighted her testimony as an early example of evangelisation.

He described the Lenten season as a time for believers to rediscover faith and remove obstacles that block God’s grace. The Holy Father urged Christians to serve those seeking truth and justice while fostering unity and reconciliation.
