MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s bishops have issued an urgent appeal for peace, prayer, and prudence following a wave of organized crime violence triggered by the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, the notorious head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The violence erupted after Mexican forces carried out a military operation resulting in the drug lord’s death, prompting retaliatory attacks, roadblocks, and arson across several states, according to Reuters.
“Let not your hearts be troubled”
The Bishops of Mexico opened their pastoral letter with Jesus’ words from John 14:27, reminding the nation of the deeper promise of peace Christ offers.
The statement — addressed to “the People of God who journey as pilgrims in Mexico” — was signed by:
- Ramón Castro Castro, President
- Héctor M. Pérez Villarreal, Secretary General
Both serve within the Mexican Episcopal Conference.
The bishops said they wished to draw close to the faithful amid “moments of violence being experienced in various regions of our country”, calling for unity and spiritual vigilance.
Call for prudence and strengthened security

The bishops urged Catholics across Mexico to:
- Strengthen personal and community security
- Remain indoors when necessary
- Avoid unnecessary travel
- Follow all guidance from civil authorities
They also appealed for intensified prayer for national peace, especially within:
- Families
- Parishes
- Sunday Eucharistic celebrations
- Local communities
Entrusting the nation to Our Lady of Guadalupe
The bishops entrusted the nation to Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s beloved patroness — Our Lady of Guadalupe, Queen of Peace — asking for her protection over families and communities during this dangerous period.
They encouraged the faithful to be:
- Sowers of reconciliation
- Builders of justice, peace, and hope
- Witnesses of solidarity and faith
Their message expressed hope that prayer becomes a “trusting supplication to Jesus Christ, Lord of history and Prince of Peace.”
Aftermath of the killing of ‘El Mencho’
According to Reuters, the death of El Mencho — one of Mexico’s most feared and elusive cartel leaders — represents a major milestone in joint U.S.–Mexico security efforts, but it has also unleashed significant retaliatory violence.
Reports indicate:
- Roadblocks, burning vehicles, and attacks across multiple states
- Heightened military presence
- Increased civilian insecurity
Authorities warn that tensions may escalate further as cartel factions reorganize or seek revenge.
