President Donald Trump announced during the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., on Thursday that the United States plans to rededicate itself to God as part of celebrations marking the nation’s 250th anniversary. A nationwide prayer event is set for May 17 on the National Mall. Catholic Broadcasting Network (CBN) reported that Americans nationwide will join a public ceremony to unite, reflect and give thanks through shared belief. Participants are encouraged to attend from all states and communities.

Trump said he had spoken humorously about his personal faith journey when suggesting he might not qualify for heaven. CBN reported that Trump’s comments were light-hearted. He disputed media interpretations that suggested personal doubt and stressed his devotion remains strong. A post shared on X following the event reaffirmed his commitment to restoring America’s spiritual foundation as “one nation under God.”

The president emphasised the importance of religion in strengthening national values, stressing that a great nation requires religion, faith and belief in God. The White House later shared the message in an official Facebook post following the breakfast. He outlined plans for the large prayer gathering as part of commemorative events throughout the anniversary year. He described it as a way to unite Americans from all communities in shared spiritual reflection and gratitude.

According to CBN, Trump stated that the goal of the event is to bring Americans together in prayer and thanksgiving. He added that public faith and unity are essential to national renewal, moral guidance, and fostering a sense of collective purpose during the country’s historic milestone year.
