In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing U.S.–Israel conflict with Iran, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say they have destroyed an underground bunker beneath the leadership compound in Tehran that was built for the late Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to the IDF, approximately 50 Israeli Air Force fighter jets carried out the strike early Friday, dropping around 100 bombs on the subterranean complex. The bunker was described as a highly fortified command centre intended to serve as a secure wartime headquarters for Khamenei. Though he was reportedly killed earlier in the conflict, the bunker remained in use by senior Iranian officials before its destruction.
The underground facility extended beneath several streets of central Tehran, with multiple entrances and meeting rooms designed for gatherings of regime leaders. Israel’s military said that taking out the bunker further degrades Iran’s ability to coordinate and control its forces amid the broader conflict.
The operation reflects a significant tactical move to weaken Iran’s command infrastructure and is part of sustained military pressure by U.S. and Israeli forces targeting strategic assets linked to Iran’s political and military leadership.
