Pope Leo XIV announced “I will never forget you” from the Book of Isaiah 49:15 as the theme for the Sixth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, according to the Vatican Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life. Dioceses worldwide will mark the observance on July 26 with Eucharistic liturgies and parish-based initiatives honouring older people.

The day, established in 2021 by the late Pope Francis, aims to strengthen the Church’s closeness to older members of the community and highlight their role within families, parishes and society. Observed every fourth Sunday of July, this year’s celebration falls on July 26 and coincides with the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, traditionally honoured as the grandparents of Jesus.

The chosen scripture passage offers consolation and hope to grandparents and seniors, particularly those living in loneliness or neglect. The dicastery encouraged families and ecclesial communities to recognise elderly faithful as a precious presence and a source of wisdom and faith. Church officials further emphasized that God’s love remains constant even in the frailty of old age.
According to Vatican News, the department urged local Churches, associations and groups to conduct visits, prayers and outreach efforts. It will also distribute pastoral resources to guide preparations worldwide.
