Holy See expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in the Middle East during interventions at the United Nations in Geneva. Addressing the Human Rights Council, Archbishop Ettore Balestrero, Permanent Observer of the Holy See, spoke of the “tragic events unfolding” and voiced profound sorrow for innocent victims, especially children, and for families forced to flee their homes.
The Archbishop highlighted the grave humanitarian crisis, pointing to attacks on civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and residential areas. He warned that such violence—sometimes involving advanced technologies—deepens human suffering and destabilizes entire communities. Echoing the words of Pope Leo XIV, he reminded the world that the pain of the innocent “hurts all of humanity” and cannot be ignored.
Reaffirming the Church’s moral voice, the Holy See insisted that peace and stability cannot be achieved through weapons or retaliation, which only sow further destruction. Instead, it called on all parties to embrace diplomacy, dialogue, and full respect for international law, urging leaders to take responsibility before the crisis becomes irreversible.
