Indian-born Carmelite priest Fr. Joshy George Pottackal became the first non-European auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Mainz in western Germany, marking a historic shift in the country’s Catholic leadership. According to Deutsche Welle, the episcopal consecration was held on March 15, 2026, at Mainz Cathedral. He will be serving in the Diocese of Mainz, reflecting the Church’s growing diversity.
The 48-year-old, who has lived in Germany for over 20 years, was appointed in November 2025. Many Catholics from migrant backgrounds welcomed the decision, saying it showed they are part of the Church. The newly consecrated bishop also stated that the decision was a strong sign of inclusion.

The Diocese of Mainz stated that the new auxiliary bishop would assist in pastoral duties, including parish visits, confirmations, and representing the Church. His selection was described as significant, as bishops in Germany have traditionally come from local European backgrounds, making this a notable break from convention.
The German Bishops’ Conference noted that about 3.4 million Catholics in Germany hold foreign citizenship out of a total of nearly 20 million. Several dioceses also reported a rise in linguistic and cultural diversity within their parishes. Bishop Peter Kohlgraf said that the appointment was a strong sign for the times, adding that the Catholic Church remains a global community where no one is considered a stranger.
