A massive fire tore through the True Light Temple of Praise, a well-known Baptist church at 1602 Drexel Avenue in Ford Heights, on Wednesday afternoon, leaving the building severely damaged and largely reduced to ruins. Fire crews from Ford Heights and neighboring communities responded to a two-alarm blaze shortly after 2 p.m., as thick smoke and intense flames consumed much of the roof and interior.
Two church maintenance workers were inside performing routine tasks when the fire broke out. Both escaped safely and were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, officials confirmed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and authorities have reported no signs of foul play.

For decades, the True Light Temple of Praise has served as a cornerstone of the Ford Heights community, functioning as a place of worship, fellowship, and outreach. In the aftermath, the church’s pastor and congregation have begun rallying support and donations to assist with rebuilding and recovery efforts.
Pastor James Morgan described the scene as heartbreaking, noting that the nearly 60-year-old church has long been a beacon of hope for the community and that more than $40,000 had recently been invested in renovation and revitalization efforts. Local residents and faith leaders have offered prayers and support as the congregation looks toward recovery.
