Iran has a new Supreme Leader. Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been elected to lead the Islamic Republic, according to reports from Iran International citing informed sources. The selection was reportedly made under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who pushed for a swift appointment amid the ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel.
Mojtaba is a mid-ranking cleric who teaches Shiite theology in Qom. He has never held formal government office, but is believed to have significant influence behind the scenes, with close ties to the Revolutionary Guard. The United States sanctioned him in 2019, citing his role as an unofficial representative of his father.
His appointment marks only the second leadership transition since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, following the death of Ayatollah Khamenei in strikes on February 28th.
However, Mojtaba has yet to make any public statement, and no official confirmation has been issued by Iranian state media.
