A deeply disturbing case in the United States has shaken the Christian community, as a beloved pastor was killed in a crucifixion-style attack, highlighting hostility toward Christian leaders.
Seventy-six-year-old Pastor William “Bill” Schonemann was found dead in his home in New River, Arizona, in late April 2025. Authorities said his body was positioned with arms outstretched and hands pinned in a crucifixion-like manner, along with further mutilation, including a crown of thorns.

The suspect, Adam Sheafe, later confessed and appeared in court in March 2026. He attempted to enter a “no contest” plea and requested the death penalty to accelerate the process. He reportedly told officials he targeted pastors for “breaking the first commandment” by declaring Jesus is God. His father, Chris Sheafe, said he had a criminal background and had recently become intensely focused on the Old Testament. He also claimed he sought execution to prove that “you can’t kill God’s son.”
Investigators said the crime was part of a broader plan to target up to 14 Christian leaders across the United States. Authorities confirmed multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder, and said he was arrested in Sedona while allegedly preparing another attack.
For many believers, this tragedy is a sobering reminder of the cost of discipleship. Yet even in violence, Christians are called to remain rooted in Christ—responding not with fear, but with faith, prayer, and unwavering commitment to truth and love.
