Kerala witnessed a deeply spiritual and historic moment today as Mother Eliswa Vakayil was declared Blessed at a grand beatification ceremony held at the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom in Vallarpadam, Kochi. The solemn Mass was led by Cardinal Dato’ Seri Sebastian Francis of Penang, the papal delegate, who called his visit “a pilgrimage of hope for India, Kerala, and the Church of Asia.” His words set the tone for a day filled with faith, emotion, and pride for the Christian community in Kerala.

In 2023, the Vatican officially declared Mother Eliswa Venerable for her heroic virtues.
On November 8, 2025, Cardinal Dato’ Seri Sebastian Francis of Penang, acting as the papal delegate of  Pope Leo XIV , presided over her Beatification Ceremony at the Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom in Vallarpadam, Kochi, marking a historic day of faith and pride for Kerala.

Thousands of faithful gathered for the liturgy that officially recognised Mother Eliswa’s heroic life of virtue. During the ceremony, the Vatican decree of beatification was read aloud, followed by the unveiling of her devotional portrait and the proclamation of her new title, Blessed Eliswa. The event, organised by the Archdiocese of Verapoly, included a solemn Eucharistic celebration, hymns of thanksgiving, and a candlelight procession that turned Vallarpadam into a sea of devotion and celebration.

Born on 15 October 1831 in Ochanthuruth near Kochi, Mother Eliswa dedicated her life to prayer, compassion, and education after being widowed at a young age. In 1866, she established the Third Order of the Discalced Carmelites, which later evolved into the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel the first native congregation for women in India. She founded Kerala’s earliest convent school, boarding house, and orphanage for girls, opening doors of learning and dignity for women long before her time. Her cause for sainthood began in 2008; she was declared Venerable in 2023, and after a miracle attributed to her intercession was approved by Pope Francis in 2025, this historic beatification followed.

For Kerala and the Catholic community across Asia, this beatification is more than a ceremonyit is a celebration of faith and heritage. Ahead of the event, her mortal remains were carefully exhumed and preserved for public veneration, allowing thousands of pilgrims to pay homage and seek her intercession. Church leaders say Mother Eliswa’s life continues to inspire hope, service, and renewal, especially in the fields of education and social upliftment. As the bells of Vallarpadam rang and prayers rose skyward, Kerala rejoiced in witnessing a radiant chapter of holiness unfold before the world.
