In a recent development in Iran, five individuals who converted from Islam to Christianity have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from two to five years. The charges stem from their participation in house churches, which are considered illegal under Iran’s strict laws governing religious expression.

The sentences were handed down in late September 2025, following arrests made in 2023. The Christians were convicted of “acting against national security” through their religious activities, a common accusation used to suppress religious minorities in the country. Despite the lack of evidence linking their gatherings to any security threat, the court upheld the charges, citing their involvement in private worship groups.

Human rights organizations have raised concerns about the fairness of the trials, pointing to a broader pattern of discrimination against religious minorities in Iran. Converts from Islam face particular scrutiny, as the government enforces laws that prohibit apostasy and restrict religious freedom. These laws often result in harsh penalties, including imprisonment and fines, for those who practice their faith outside state-sanctioned boundaries.

The five individuals, whose names have not been disclosed to protect their families, remain steadfast in their faith despite the looming threat of incarceration. Their cases highlight the ongoing challenges faced by religious minorities in Iran, where freedom of belief is heavily curtailed. International advocates continue to call for the release of these prisoners and for reforms to ensure religious liberty for all.
