Santa Ana Winds Fuel Southern California Wildfires | Homes Burn, Thousands Evacuated

📅 October 17, 2026 👤 SG News 💬 0 Comments

Powerful Santa Ana winds are fueling multiple wildfires across Southern California, burning homes, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate and creating dangerous fire conditions across the region.

One of the most serious fires is the Norte Fire, which began near San Clemente in Orange County and rapidly spread toward San Juan Capistrano.

Driven by hot, dry winds, the blaze grew to hundreds of acres within hours.

At least six homes were reported damaged or destroyed, while approximately 16,000 residents were placed under evacuation orders in affected neighborhoods.

Two firefighters were also taken to hospital after suffering heat-related injuries while battling the flames.

Fire crews attacked the blaze from both the ground and air as flames moved through dry vegetation and residential areas.

Farther north, firefighters continued working on the Bryson Fire near Malibu, where strong winds pushed flames through the Santa Monica Mountains and prompted evacuations.

In Azusa, crews succeeded in stopping the forward progress of the Peak Fire after it threatened nearby neighborhoods.

Southern California has been under dangerous fire-weather conditions as powerful Santa Ana winds combine with high temperatures, extremely dry vegetation and low humidity.

Red Flag Warnings remained in effect across parts of Los Angeles, Ventura and surrounding counties into Saturday.

Utilities also implemented precautionary power shutoffs in some areas in an effort to reduce the risk of electrical equipment sparking additional fires.

Authorities are urging residents in threatened communities to follow evacuation instructions immediately and remain prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

As firefighters work around the clock, strong winds remain one of the greatest challenges — capable of carrying embers long distances and causing new fires to spread with little warning.
