Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has extended a historic invitation to Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar to light a celebratory flame on Israel’s Independence Day.
In an emotional phone call, Captain Machchhar described the terrifying mid-air cockpit attack where his co-pilot repeatedly struck and stabbed him during an alleged attempt to crash the flight to Tel Aviv. Despite suffering severe head injuries and blurred vision on the cockpit floor as the Boeing 737 Max plunged nearly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds, the Indian pilot mustered his remaining strength to unlock the flight deck door. His actions enabled crew members and passengers to overpower the attacker, allowing off-duty pilots to safely land the aircraft in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
