Pope Leo Renews AI Warning: ‘Scientific Progress Must Be Accompanied by Responsibility’

📅 September 25, 2026 👤 SG News 💬 0 Comments

Pope Leo XIV has renewed one of the defining warnings of his pontificate:

Humanity must not allow technological power to grow faster than its moral responsibility.

Speaking at the Vatican on September 24 to members of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope reflected on artificial intelligence, robotics, climate change and the rapidly changing relationship between science and human society.

Leo acknowledged that AI and other new technologies can bring enormous benefits.

They can improve healthcare.

Expand scientific knowledge.

Help address food production.

Connect societies.

And open possibilities that previous generations could scarcely imagine.

But the Pope warned that their full impact remains uncertain.

Artificial intelligence, he said, can also be used for surveillance, manipulation and discrimination.

Advanced cyber capabilities and autonomous weapons could create new dangers for security and international peace if developed without adequate safeguards and genuine human oversight.

His central message was clear:

“Scientific and technological advancement must therefore be accompanied by a corresponding growth in responsibility.”

For Pope Leo, technological progress cannot be measured only by what humanity becomes capable of doing.

It must also be judged by whether that progress protects the God-given dignity of the human person.

The Pope connected the same principle to climate change.

He warned that scientific power brings increased responsibility toward creation and toward vulnerable communities who often suffer most from environmental disasters.

The address continues a theme Pope Leo has emphasized since the first days of his pontificate.

Artificial intelligence has become one of the central ethical questions of his papacy.

In May, Leo issued his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, focused on safeguarding the human person in the age of artificial intelligence.

The document warns that AI can spread misinformation, reinforce discrimination, threaten privacy, disrupt employment and encourage societies to surrender important decisions to automated systems.

It also raises serious concerns about AI-driven warfare and weapons capable of operating with decreasing levels of meaningful human control.

Leo insists that decisions involving life, dignity, justice and moral responsibility cannot simply be handed over to machines.

Algorithms can calculate.

But they do not possess human conscience.

They cannot replace compassion, mercy, responsibility or genuine moral judgment.

The Pope is expected to develop these themes again on September 25 during an official visit to UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

His address will take place during a day dedicated to artificial intelligence, education, information integrity, culture and peace.

As governments and technology companies race to develop increasingly powerful AI, Pope Leo is asking a deeper question:

Not simply, “What can technology do?”

But:

“What should humanity allow technology to do?”

Progress without responsibility can become dangerous.

Innovation without human dignity can become dehumanizing.

And technology without conscience can never replace the moral responsibility entrusted to the human person.
