This Christmas season, the story of Christ’s birth is set to reach theaters in a dramatic new way. Angel Studios’ Zero A.D.: The Birth of Christ, directed by Alejandro Monteverde, brings audiences into the dangerous world surrounding the arrival of Jesus, where a ruler consumed by fear sees a newborn child as a threat to his throne. The film is scheduled for nationwide release in theaters on December 11, 2026.
At the heart of the story is Mary, who faces unimaginable danger while protecting her Son. The film presents the Nativity not simply as a peaceful beginning, but as a story of sacrifice, courage and faith unfolding as darkness attempts to extinguish the light.
The cast features Deva Cassel as Mary, Jamie Ward as Joseph, Sam Worthington, Ben Mendelsohn, Gael García Bernal and Jim Caviezel. Caviezel’s role is especially striking: after portraying Jesus in The Passion of the Christ, he now takes on the role of King Herod — the ruler terrified by the birth of a new king. Originally announced under the title Bethlehem, the film is set to offer audiences a powerful cinematic experience of the story surrounding Christ’s birth.
