WHEN SACRED ALTARS BECOME POLITICAL PROPS

📅 September 10, 2026 👤 SG News 💬 0 Comments

A Catholic church is not a neutral stage. It is consecrated ground—set apart for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the worship of Almighty God. Inside St. Severi in Erfurt, the sanctuary was draped in rainbow flags, secular symbols, and drag spectacles—all under the banner of “welcome.” On the Domplatz outside, the city’s Christopher Street Day festival and political parade unfolded in full force, directly alongside the cathedral steps. Yet this was no abandoned or deconsecrated hall, for the diocese resumed broadcasting the Catholic radio Mass from that very same sanctuary the next morning.

True welcome has never been denied. Any soul, carrying any burden or cross, is called to enter, kneel before the Blessed Sacrament, repent, and seek divine mercy. Christ came for sinners. But there is a profound chasm between welcoming sinners into conversion, and welcoming an ideological identity movement into the sanctuary to baptize its worldview. When sacred space is commandeered for cultural validation, we must recall Christ driving the merchants from the Temple:”My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you make it a den of robbers.” (Matthew 21:13). Saint Paul reminds us in Romans 12:2:”Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church clearly teaches that the church building is:”A house of prayer in which the Eucharist is celebrated and reserved… It ought to be in good taste and a worthy place for prayer and sacred ceremonial.” (CCC 1198) Canon Law explicitly states that only those things which serve worship, piety, or religion are permitted in sacred places—anything out of harmony with the holiness of the place is forbidden. When an altar becomes a political prop, charity is severed from truth. We do not honor God by conforming His bride to the spirit of the age. We honor Him by standing firm in the truth that frees us, repenting for sacrilege, and reclaiming our churches as houses of prayer—and prayer alone.
