Christians around the world continue to endure severe persecution, facing violence, displacement, and deep emotional trauma. Yet, amid suffering, many demonstrate extraordinary resilience through their faith. The story of Jacques from the Democratic Republic of the Congo is one such powerful testimony of moving from survival to purpose.

After surviving a brutal attack by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist extremist group linked to ISIS, Jacques was left uncertain about his future, his dreams seeming distant and unattainable. Like many persecuted Christians in eastern Congo, he carried both physical and psychological scars. However, even in the darkness, hope began to take root. Determined to rebuild his life, he pursued a career in medicine despite overwhelming challenges.

During this critical time, International Christian Concern (ICC) came alongside him, offering academic, moral, and social support. With their help, Jacques completed a three-year bachelor’s degree in anesthesia and critical care in 2024. Today, he serves as an anesthetist at Masiki Hospital in Butembo City, caring for patients and helping families cope with trauma.
His story unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing persecution in the DRC, which ranks among the most dangerous places for Christians on the Open Doors World Watch List. In eastern regions, Islamist militants like the ADF continue to target Christian communities through brutal attacks, killings, kidnappings, and the destruction of churches and homes. Entire villages have been devastated, forcing many believers to flee or live in constant fear.
Despite this relentless violence, Jacques’ journey reflects a powerful truth: even in the face of persecution, faith can transform suffering into purpose. His life stands as a witness to the enduring strength, hope, and perseverance found in Christ.
