President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence amid a deepening security crisis. The nomination was formally communicated to the Senate following the resignation of former minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, reportedly due to health concerns.
General Musa, who hails from Jos in Plateau State and comes from a Christian background, previously served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 to October 2025. Known for speaking about unity and religious tolerance, his background is seen by some observers as significant in a country often affected by sectarian tensions.
His announcement comes at a time when Nigeria is facing escalating violence and targeted attacks against Christian communities. A seasoned military leader, he has extensive experience in counterinsurgency operations, particularly against Boko Haram and ISWAP in the northeast, and his appointment is widely viewed as a strategic move to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
Security analysts believe Musa’s battlefield experience and leadership background will be critical in addressing worsening insecurity, as the government faces mounting pressure to curb violence and restore stability across affected regions.
