In a clear and faithful catechesis on March 25, Pope Leo XIV explained why the Catholic Church reserves priestly ordination to men, emphasizing that this teaching is rooted in Christ’s will and the Church’s unbroken tradition.

Drawing from the Second Vatican Council’s document Lumen Gentium, the Holy Father highlighted the distinction between the common priesthood of all the baptized and the ministerial priesthood entrusted to ordained ministers. While all believers share in Christ’s mission, he explained that the ordained priest uniquely represents Christ in a sacramental way within the Church.

The Pope reaffirmed that the priest acts in persona Christi, particularly in the celebration of the Eucharist, and emphasized that this understanding is rooted in Christ’s own choice of the apostles and faithfully preserved in the Church’s tradition.

Pope Leo XIV stressed that this teaching is not about inequality but about vocation and mission. Every calling—whether priesthood, consecrated life, or lay service—reflects the richness of God’s plan. In remaining faithful to Christ’s example, the Church seeks not to limit, but to safeguard the truth of the sacrament.

In a world often shaped by debates on roles and rights, the Pope’s message stands as a reminder: the priesthood is a gift rooted in divine design, calling each believer to serve according to God’s will in the Body of Christ.
