British authorities have charged two men with espionage, suspected of acting on behalf of Iranian intelligence, after an investigation into alleged surveillance of London’s Jewish community. The suspects, 22-year-old Iranian national Alireza Farasati and 40-year-old dual British-Iranian citizen Nematollah Shahsavani, were arrested on 6 March and charged under the UK’s National Security Act.
Prosecutors said the alleged activities, occurring between 9 July and 15 August 2025, “may assist a foreign intelligence service.” Both men are expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court as the case progresses.
The Crown Prosecution Service and the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command called the allegations “extremely serious” and highlighted their commitment to public safety, especially for potentially targeted communities. Two other individuals arrested in the same probe were released without charges. Authorities continue to urge vigilance and cooperation with national security reporting channels in response to foreign interference threats.
