U.S. President Donald Trump has called for a multinational naval coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime passage through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas flows. The move comes amid escalating tensions between the U.S., Israel, and Iran, following Tehran’s effective closure of the strait. Trump has urged seven countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Japan, South Korea, and China, to send warships to ensure safe commercial passage.

France has firmly rejected the request, stating its forces remain in a defensive posture and will not join a U.S.-led coalition. Paris stressed diplomatic and European-led measures to protect shipping rather than immediate military deployment.

Similarly, the United Kingdom has declined to send Royal Navy warships. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer confirmed that London would not take part in direct military operations but is exploring options such as mine-clearing support and unmanned mine-hunting drones to help reopen the strait safely.

Other allies, including Japan and Australia, have also ruled out active ship deployments, keeping the international response cautious. Analysts warn that the absence of a coordinated coalition could have long-term strategic consequences, while global oil prices have already surged past $100 a barrel amid the disruption.

The standoff underscores growing divisions among Western allies on responding to Iran, leaving the vital shipping lane vulnerable and increasing pressure on global energy markets.
