Church leaders warn ongoing conflict threatens human dignity and regional stability

The Assembly of Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops in Lebanon has issued a strong appeal for peace as violence continues to escalate across the Middle East. The statement, released on March 5, warns that the growing conflict risks plunging the region into deeper instability and suffering.

The bishops expressed “deep concern over the current situation”, highlighting the severe consequences the violence is having on civilians, including displacement, destruction, and worsening humanitarian conditions.

Call to end the spiral of violence

Referring to the worsening crisis, the bishops stressed that continued violence undermines the dignity of human life.

They warned that the escalation of conflict “threatens the dignity of the human person, which is a gift from God,” while also weakening the foundations of justice and stability in the region.

Quoting Pope Leo XIV, the bishops reminded the world of the moral responsibility to reject violence.

“Violence is never the right choice, and we must always choose the good,” the Pope had said.

The assembly emphasized that peace must not be seen as a temporary option but rather a moral duty and shared responsibility for humanity.

Appeal for dialogue and diplomacy

Church leaders called for an immediate halt to the escalation of violence and urged governments to return to constructive dialogue and diplomatic solutions.

They stressed that lasting peace can only be achieved through justice, cooperation, and respect for the dignity of all people.

The bishops also encouraged the international community to intensify efforts to prevent further escalation and to work toward fair and sustainable solutions for the region.

Message to Lebanon’s leaders

Addressing political authorities in the country, the bishops described Lebanon as a “land of message and coexistence.”

They urged national leaders to fulfill their responsibilities by protecting internal unity and strengthening civil peace.

The statement also emphasized the importance of maintaining state sovereignty, noting that weapons must remain under the authority of the state to preserve national stability.

Solidarity with displaced families

The Church leaders expressed concern for the growing number of families forced to flee their homes due to the conflict.

They called on communities to show solidarity with those suffering and to provide assistance to displaced civilians.

Quoting the Gospel of Matthew, the bishops reminded Christians of the importance of welcoming those in need:
“I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”

Prayer for peace in Lebanon and the Middle East

The bishops concluded their message by asking believers to continue praying for peace in Lebanon and throughout the Middle East.

Entrusting the region to God’s providence, they prayed that leaders would choose dialogue instead of destruction and work for the common good rather than further war.
