According to Azerbaijani officials, one drone struck the airport’s terminal building while another fell near a school in the village of Shakarabad. Emergency crews quickly arrived at the scene as footage circulating online showed damage to the terminal and smoke rising from the site after the explosion.

“We strongly condemn these drone attacks launched from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which resulted in damage to the airport building and injuries of two civilians,” Azerbaijani authorities said in a statement.

Another video shows a drone flying toward the airport before a large explosion erupts upon impact, sending a cloud of smoke over the facility.

Baku has requested an official explanation from Tehran and demanded that such attacks not be repeated. The Nakhchivan exclave lies close to the Iranian-Azerbaijani border, heightening concerns over regional security.

Tensions between Iran and Azerbaijan have grown in recent years over border security, military cooperation between Azerbaijan and Israel, and disputes over transport routes and influence in the South Caucasus. Tehran has repeatedly accused Baku of allowing Israeli intelligence operations near its border, while Azerbaijan has criticised Iran’s military drills and support for groups hostile to its government.

At least two people were injured after Iranian drones targeted the passenger terminal of Nakhchivan International Airport on Thursday, authorities said.
