Pope Leo XIV concluded a week of Lenten Spiritual Exercises on 27 February 2026, inviting members of the Roman Curia, cardinals, and heads of dicasteries to embrace reflections that will strengthen their faith and service to the Church during Lent. The retreat was held in the Pauline Chapel at the Vatican and was preached by Bishop Erik Varden of Trondheim, Norway.
The exercises, held from 22 to 27 February, were centered on the theme “Illuminated by a Hidden Glory” and included two meditations each day followed by prayer and Eucharistic adoration. Bishop Varden offered reflections on a range of spiritual themes drawn from scripture and the teachings of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, including freedom, truth, human temptation, and hope in Christ.
At the retreat’s conclusion, Pope Leo described the week as “a profound spiritual experience” that helped guide the Curia’s Lenten journey. Reflecting on moments from the retreat, he recalled a meditation on the election of Pope Eugene III, evoking Saint Bernard’s words: “What have you done? May God have mercy on you.” The Pope also highlighted verses from St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians that call Christians to conduct themselves “in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Christ.”
Pope Leo expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Bishop Varden for his wisdom, testimony and meditations, and acknowledged the contributions of the liturgical team and choir for enhancing the prayer experience. He stressed the importance of music as a powerful aid to prayer that lifts the spirit toward the Lord.
As Lent continues, the spiritual insights from the retreat are expected to resonate throughout the Vatican and the wider Church, encouraging clergy and laity alike to live their faith with deeper devotion and hope.
