Newsweek 2026 global ranking honours excellence in pediatric care, safety, and research
The Vatican’s world-renowned Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital has been named Europe’s top pediatric hospital and 6th best in the world in the 2026 “World’s Best Hospitals” list published by Newsweek in collaboration with global data firm Statista.
The prestigious ranking evaluated more than 2,500 hospitals across 32 countries, analyzing clinical performance, patient outcomes, medical expertise, and peer-to-peer surveys involving tens of thousands of healthcare professionals.
A European Leader in Child Health and Advanced Pediatric Medicine
Bambino Gesù earned the No.1 spot in Europe due to:
- Outstanding clinical excellence
- High levels of patient safety
- Strong family-centered care
- Leadership in rare disease research
- Superior training and innovation in pediatric medicine
The hospital participates in 20 of Europe’s 24 Reference Networks for rare diseases—more than any other pediatric center on the continent.
It also holds the prestigious JCI Academic Medical Center accreditation, underscoring its international standards of care, research, and clinical governance.

Hospital president Tiziano Onesti praised the achievement, crediting the “extraordinary teamwork” of the hospital’s doctors, nurses, researchers, chaplains, and support staff.
He noted that the ranking strengthens Bambino Gesù’s long-standing mission:

Each year, the Vatican-owned pediatric hospital delivers:
- 3 million outpatient services
- 100,000 emergency room visits
- 33,000+ surgeries
The hospital also thanked families, caregivers, benefactors, and the Holy See for supporting its global mission to bring healing and hope to children regardless of nationality, religion, or ability to pay.
