Sri Lanka’s tourism landscape is gaining a new globally minded addition with the opening of the Ceylon Lodge Airport Transit Hostel, a community-driven social hub founded by entrepreneur Ravidu Mario Weerakoon.
The launch marks a striking career evolution—from international tech scaling to hospitality built around culture, connection, and coexistence.

From Tech Stress to Strategic Reinvention

Between 2018 and 2019, during a period marked by intense pressure, Weerakoon made a deliberate decision to step back and rebuild his professional approach. Rather than allowing stress to dictate his direction, he immersed himself in structured learning and long-term competence building.

He went on to complete three UK chartered qualifications:

  • Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport
  • Chartered Institute of Marketing
  • Chartered Management Institute

He later earned a Master’s degree from the University of Gloucestershire.
This academic phase gave him discipline, clarity, and a strategic worldview that would shape his future ventures.

Global Experiences that Shifted His Vision

During the same years, Weerakoon lived and travelled across Thailand, UAE, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Oman, gaining firsthand insight into diverse cultures and hospitality models.

Dubai proved especially transformative. While working in AI and digital marketing in one of the world’s most multicultural hubs, he observed how intentional urban design and hospitality create space for peaceful coexistence at global scale.

This sparked a fundamental question:

If commerce connects goods, and technology connects data—what connects people?
His answer: travel.

Building Ceylon Lodge: A Social Hub, Not Just a Hostel

Together with his family, Weerakoon launched Ceylon Lodge near the airport, designed intentionally as a community-oriented social hub rather than a traditional budget hostel.

The property features:

  • A large communal hangout area
  • Dedicated movie zone
  • BBQ space for group evenings
  • Swimming pool with jacuzzi
  • Fully equipped gym
  • In-house restaurant and bar

Everything—from architecture to experience programming—is designed to encourage interaction between international travellers.

Instead of focusing solely on occupancy metrics, the Lodge prioritizes connection, shared stories, and cultural exchange, positioning itself as a hub for transit travellers and young global explorers.

A Tech Entrepreneur Reinvesting in Sri Lanka’s Future

Before his move into hospitality, Weerakoon spent a decade building a career across AI, digital marketing, logistics, and global commerce.
His most notable venture was Surf2Ship, a cross-border price comparison and logistics platform built to simplify international shopping.

The startup eventually expanded, gained multinational interest, and was sold to a Singapore-based company. Though the platform went dormant during economic and pandemic disruptions, its underlying infrastructure continues to operate quietly within one of the world’s largest e-commerce ecosystems.

Now, by reinvesting his global knowledge back into Sri Lanka, Weerakoon embodies a new generation of entrepreneurs contributing to the country’s modern tourism renewal.

A Transition From Transactions to Human Connection

Today, his philosophy has shifted:

  • Surf2Ship moved products across borders.
  • Ceylon Lodge brings people together across borders.

As Sri Lanka seeks deeper international engagement and a revitalized tourism identity, ventures like Ceylon Lodge signal the rise of globally experienced entrepreneurs returning home to build locally rooted, globally relevant hospitality models.

For Weerakoon, this chapter is not a pivot—it is an expansion of purpose.
A move from building digital infrastructure to creating physical spaces designed for connection, coexistence, and long-term social impact.
