Ejections, shouting and hockey players – Key moments from Trump’s big speech

In the longest State of the Union address ever delivered, U.S. President Donald Trump used his nationally televised stage to deliver a triumphant — and sometimes combative — report on the state of America.

He spoke to a sharply divided Congress and tens of millions of viewers, addressing economic frustrations, rising tensions with Iran, his tariff battles, and his plans for the coming election year.

Here are the biggest moments from the dramatic night.

1. A Supreme Court bench half empty

It was the first time Trump had faced members of the Supreme Court of the United States since sharply criticizing them for striking down his global tariff program.

Only four of nine justices attended:

  • John Roberts
  • Amy Coney Barrett
  • Elena Kagan
  • Brett Kavanaugh

The handshake between Trump and Chief Justice Roberts was brief and icy — a visual reminder of the tension.

When Trump criticized the court for the tariff ruling during his speech, cameras focused on Barrett, who remained expressionless even though she had been appointed by Trump and still ruled against him.

Trump announced a new 15% tariff, imposed under Section 122 — a rarely-used law allowing temporary tariffs for 150 days. He insisted:

“Congressional action will not be necessary.”

Critics viewed this as Trump hinting he may bypass legal limits.

2. Democrat ejected from the chamber — again

Protests are now a familiar part of Trump’s State of the Union nights — and this year was no exception.

Democratic Representative Al Green was removed from the chamber for the second consecutive year after holding a sign reading:
“Black people aren’t apes!”

The sign referenced a racist AI-generated video posted and later deleted from Trump’s social media account depicting Barack Obama and Michelle Obama as apes.

Green’s protest and shouting led officials to escort him out.

Meanwhile, Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib repeatedly heckled the president.

Omar shouted:

“That’s a lie — you’re a liar!”

as Trump talked about immigration and alleged fraud in Minnesota’s Somali-American communities.

Their interruptions highlighted the deep partisan hostility inside the chamber.

3. Olympic hockey heroes steal the spotlight

In one of the night’s more cinematic moments, the U.S. men’s hockey team — fresh off their overtime gold-medal win over Canada — entered the chamber from the press gallery to roaring applause.

Wearing navy sweaters with the American flag and holding their gold medals, they brought a burst of patriotic energy to the evening.

Trump announced that star goalie Connor Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

The moment followed a viral locker-room clip from Sunday, where FBI Director Kash Patel called Trump on speakerphone during the team’s celebration.

Trump also addressed online criticism for initially inviting only the men’s team.
He conceded that the U.S. women’s hockey team, who also won gold, would be visiting the White House soon.

“If I didn’t invite the women’s team, I think I’d be impeached,” he joked.

4. Patriotism — and political division — on full display

Throughout the speech, Trump blended patriotism with pointed political messaging.

As part of his pitch ahead of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, he asked members to stand if they agreed:

“The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.”

Republicans jumped to their feet chanting and applauding.
Democrats sat silently in protest.

Trump seized the moment:

“These people are crazy… I’m telling you. They’re crazy.”

The striking visual — half the chamber standing, half motionless — captured the intense divide shaping U.S. politics heading into the midterms.
