Blast Outside Moscow’s Savyolovsky Station Leaves One Officer Dead
An explosion outside Savyolovsky Station in northern Moscow has killed a traffic police officer and injured two others, according to a statement from the Russian Interior Ministry.
The blast occurred just after midnight on Tuesday (Monday 21:05 GMT) as officers were patrolling the station square. Authorities say “an unidentified device was detonated” by “an unknown individual.”
Attacker Reportedly Died at the Scene
Initial reports suggested the attacker had fled. However, the Interior Ministry later confirmed that the perpetrator died at the scene.
The attacker approached officers assigned to the North-Eastern District of Moscow, but officials have not released any details about his identity or possible motives.
A criminal case has been opened for:
- Attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer
- Use of an explosive device
Officials say multiple law enforcement units are working jointly to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
Two Officers Hospitalised, One Killed
The explosion left two traffic police officers with “various injuries.” They were immediately hospitalised.
The officer who died has been identified as 34-year-old Police Lieutenant Denis Bratuschenko, a senior traffic inspector who joined the force in 2019.
He is survived by his wife and two children.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Irina Volk issued a statement offering condolences:
“The leadership and personnel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia express their sincere condolences to the family.”
Major Transport Hub Targeted
Savyolovsky Station is one of Moscow’s major railway hubs and a busy transit point, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
As of now, no further details have been released about the type of explosive used or potential security threats to other transport centres.
