Historic Snowfall Triggers Travel Chaos Across U.S. Northeast

A powerful winter storm battered the U.S. East Coast on Monday, dumping record-breaking snow across multiple states, disrupting travel for millions, and causing more than 5,700 flight cancellations nationwide.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported:

  • 37 inches (94 cm) in parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts
  • 19 inches (48 cm) in New York City’s Central Park
  • Near “impossible” travel conditions across New York

More than 600,000 homes and businesses on the East Coast experienced power outages, with New Jersey and Massachusetts suffering the most severe disruptions.

Record Broken: Rhode Island Hit Hardest

Rhode Island recorded its worst snowstorm in history, with Providence receiving 36 inches—shattering the previous 1978 record of 28.6 inches.

Candice Hrencecin, an NWS meteorologist in Boston, told the New York Times the numbers were shocking:

“It completely smashed it. We were just as shocked as everyone else.”

Travel Bans and Warnings Across the Region

Authorities imposed strict non-essential travel bans:

  • Rhode Island and Connecticut issued bans early Monday
  • Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey later extended a ban across Southeastern Massachusetts and reduced highway speed limits

Healey warned:

“Whiteout conditions are making travel extremely dangerous… I strongly urge everyone to stay off the roads.”

In Massachusetts, nearly 300,000 residents lost power—up to 85% in Barnstable County, including Cape Cod.

New York City at a Standstill

A travel ban brought New York City (population 8+ million) to an almost complete halt before being lifted at noon. All major:

  • Roads
  • Highways
  • Bridges

were closed due to the severity of conditions.

More than 300 cars were towed in Providence, but by afternoon, tow trucks shifted to helping stranded drivers instead.

Air Travel Collapse: Nearly Every Flight Cancelled

According to FlightAware:

  • 5,706 U.S. flights were cancelled Monday
  • LaGuardia Airport: 98% of flights cancelled
  • JFK Airport: 91% cancelled
  • Boston Logan: 92% cancelled
  • Newark Liberty (NJ): 92% cancelled
  • Philadelphia International: 80% cancelled

Most affected airports received 19 inches (48 cm) of snow, crippling operations.

More disruptions are expected Tuesday, with 2,000+ cancellations projected, especially in Boston and New York.

Storm Extends Into Canada

Winter storm warnings stretched from North Carolina all the way to Northern Maine, with some alerts in place across parts of Eastern Canada as the system moved north.

The snow is expected to continue into early Tuesday, with coastal Northeast regions forecast to receive 1 to 2 feet of total accumulation.
