In a special message addressed to José H. Gomez, Pope Leo XIV extended heartfelt greetings to participants of the 70th Los Angeles Religious Education Congress taking place in Anaheim, California, highlighting its role as a moment of “true spiritual renewal.”
The message—sent through Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State—underscored the vital mission of catechists, teachers, and ministry leaders as they guide the faithful deeper into the Gospel.
“Authenticity Leads Others to Christ”
Pope Leo XIV emphasized that the heart of effective religious education lies in a genuine, living relationship with Jesus Christ.
“By deepening your relationship with Jesus, who is the Truth, and continuing to be faithful and joyful disciples in your daily lives, your authenticity as educators and catechetical leaders will enable you to transmit the Gospel in such a way that it leads to a true encounter with the Lord.”
He reminded educators that only those who truly seek Christ can awaken the desire for truth in others.
A Gathering That Draws Thousands

The Los Angeles Religious Education Congress, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Office of Religious Education, is the largest annual Catholic gathering of its kind in the United States.
This year’s theme — “Wrapped in Mercy, Hope Renewed” — reflects a renewed call to healing and evangelization.
The four-day event (Feb 19–22, 2026) includes:
- Workshops and keynote talks
- Multicultural liturgies
- Exhibits and ministry showcases
- Spiritual celebrations and community prayer
It opened with Youth Day on February 19, followed by adult sessions through February 22.
“An Opportunity for True Spiritual Renewal”
In the Pope’s message, he expressed his hope that these days of prayer, formation, and fellowship would refresh the spiritual life of all participants:
“May these days provide an opportunity for true spiritual renewal.”
He highlighted that Jesus’ love—manifested on the Cross and in the Blessed Sacrament—remains a constant source of “comfort and strength in all of life’s circumstances.”
Encouragement to the Young
Pope Leo XIV issued a special word to the youth gathered:
- Open your hearts to God’s love
- Discover the strength of Jesus’ Eucharistic presence
- Remain rooted in the Church’s mission of hope and mercy
Entrusted to Our Lady
The Pope concluded by entrusting all participants to Mary, Our Lady of the Angels, invoking her maternal protection over the Church in Los Angeles and all catechetical leaders.
He imparted his Apostolic Blessing, assuring the Congress of his prayers.
