Washington, Feb 20, 2026 — The U.S. military conducted a lethal strike on an alleged drug-smuggling boat in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Friday, killing three people in the second such strike this week, the U.S. U.S. Southern Command said.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Southern Command said the strike was carried out under the direction of Gen. Francis L. Donovan, commander of Joint Task Force Operation Southern Spear. Intelligence assessments reportedly concluded that the vessel was transiting known narcotics trafficking routes and was connected to “designated terrorist organizations,” a term the U.S. military has used to describe groups allegedly linked to drug smuggling.

Part of an Ongoing Campaign

The attack on Friday follows another strike earlier this week in which U.S. forces hit multiple suspected drug-smuggling boats, resulting in the deaths of 11 people. Those operations were also conducted by Southern Command’s task force as part of a broader counter-narcotics campaign that has included dozens of similar actions in both the eastern Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea since late 2025.

Officials said no U.S. service members were harmed in the latest engagement. A video released by Southern Command showed the targeted vessel bursting into flames following the strike.

Controversy and Debate

The strikes have drawn significant controversy. U.S. military officials maintain the operations are aimed at disrupting illicit drug networks and preventing large quantities of drugs from reaching the United States. However, critics — including some lawmakers and legal experts — have raised concerns about the legality and transparency of the strikes, especially given that the military has not publicly presented evidence linking each targeted vessel directly to narcotics trafficking.

Friday’s action brought the death toll from similar U.S. maritime strikes to at least 148 people across more than 40 attacks announced since the campaign began.

What’s Next

With this being the second known strike in a short period, analysts say the trend shows the Trump administration’s continued commitment to using military force against what it labels narco-terrorist threats on international waters. Critics, however, say the strategy raises complex questions about due process and international law.
