Approximately 70,000 young people participated in the pilgrimage to the Christ the King monument in Guanajuato on Jan. 31, organisers reported. The Witness and Hope movement has led the event since 1974, honouring Mexican martyrs who proclaimed, “Long live Christ the King!” Initial estimates counted 50,000 attendees, but state authorities later confirmed 70,000, surpassing previous records, including those of 2020. Organisers noted the turnout demonstrates both enthusiasm and commitment among participants.

Bishop Víctor Alejandro Aguilar Ledesma of Celaya said the turnout reflects existing faith among the youth, highlighting that they actively live and express their belief in communities and parishes. He praised their voluntary organisation, emphasising that devotion rather than politics motivates their involvement.
Archbishop Joseph Spiteri, apostolic nuncio to Mexico, encouraged the youth to become “seeds of hope,” influencing society through example and service, and inspiring other young people to follow their faith. Andrea Perea, outgoing president of Witness and Hope, urged ongoing formation to avoid “shallow spirituality” and to cultivate love for neighbours, personal responsibility and community development.

Pilgrims also commemorated the centenary of the 1926–1929 Cristero War. According to the National Catholic Register, the event showcased the enduring faith, devotion and organisational ability of Mexican youth, underlining their active role in the Church today.
