A US B-1 Lancer bomber, capable of carrying up to 24 cruise missiles, has landed at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The 146-foot aircraft, nicknamed “the Bone,” is the fastest bomber in the US Air Force, reaching speeds of over 900 mph, and features advanced radar, GPS, electronic jammers, and decoy systems.

The arrival follows UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer granting the US permission to use British military bases for defensive strikes on Iranian missile sites. Western officials had indicated earlier this week that the UK was prepared to host the bombers within days.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said strikes on Iran were “about to surge dramatically,” with increased bomber pulses and additional fighter squadrons. Sir Keir also spoke to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, affirming that the UK is ready to support the kingdom’s defence and is sending additional fighter jets, helicopters, and a destroyer to the region.

While the US will target Iranian missile launch sites, RAF jets continue to intercept missiles and drones launched at allies. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch urged the government to consider striking Iranian missile sites preemptively, stressing the need to neutralise threats before they reach the region.

The UK’s military stance remains defensive, allowing US strikes while protecting British lives and regional interests.
